Trip to Fallingwater for Our 5th Anniversary

Jill and I had a great time at Fallingwater this past weekend (celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary). I highly recommend getting out there to see it (especially if you are a Frank Lloyd Wright fan). Even though recently they have made adjustments to keep it stabilized, the architectural engineering was an amazing feat, especially for its time. It was built in the early 30's for around 150k (the Kaufmann's budget was around 25k). The Kaufmann family owned the Kaufmann's Department Stores which is now part of Macy's.

The food at Mike and Ronda's The Place was amazing. Some of the best diner food I've ever had. The highlights were the hash browns and the blueberry syrup for the pancakes. If you are ever in Flagstaff in need of some 24 hour breakfast place, definitely go there.

Lesson Learned

Plumbing this past weekend. I had to move kitchen sink water and drain over to the right about a foot. At the same time I decided to run a dedicated water line for the fridge.

Lesson: mixing lead flux with lead-free solder is like mixing oil and water. Very bad idea. The solder just ran right off the pipes, not sealing any of the fittings. Using lead-free solder requires lead-free flux.

On my second attempt, I also decided to give the pre-soldered fittings a try. They work great! You can find them at HD. Totally worth the extra 30 to 50 cents per fitting. Just flux, connect, and heat up with the torch until you start to see the solder come out of the fitting.

Now on to fitting drywall to cover up where I had to open up to do the plumbing.

Being unemployed is fun for a change!

The back story...

Several months ago I informed my boss that I had an interview for a job. I explained to him that I probably wouldn't be at work after this August. He knew I was looking, after all I was a student worker. It's kind of understood that you're looking for a job when you are an intern with absolutely no prospects of acquiring a full-time position there. He was happy to hear I was getting interviews.

Then, two weeks before the end of the semester, he comes into my office and asks me how my job search is going. I said, "Ok, I guess." He then blurted out, "Well, what are you going to do in two weeks?" "What?" I responded. Then he said, "Well, what are you going to do in two weeks when you don't have a job anymore?"

He is such a moron. He thinks he's so smart and everyone else is an idiot. He claimed that he couldn't get funding for me for the summer because of new rules, rules stating that after a student graduates he/she cannot work as a student worker that summer. He fully knows that I am technically not graduating. He also knows that I have until the end of the summer to sign up for a class in the fall. He was just using this as a way to fire me without having to justify it to his boss (the network admin) and his second level boss (the director of telecom).

Since I was a student worker, working 35 hour weeks, I can't get unemployment. I've had a couple phone interviews. One seemingly promising in person interview for a sys admin position, that I really want. But they are taking their time concerning a phone interview I'm supposed to have with some head technology guy. I think it's a new position, and they are probably just really busy.

But that's ok. I'm working on our kitchen, replacing cabinets. I spent a week fishing up on Cape Cod. Caught a bunch of stripers on the fly (too many to count) and a couple with a polaris popper but nothing big enough to keep.

I've also been playing a lot of Guild Wars. Great game.

As you can see from the red tip, it's only 77 degrees in my office at the moment. Usually the day starts out at 82 and works its way up to 88 by 4:00 PM. But today is a little cooler, which is a good thing. Today my boss decided to implement yet another policy. This one is concerning stolen laptops.

Here it is�

�Computers that we believe could be stolen will be returned to the user, we can not work on these computers unless the student can show proof of purchase. I will personally handle these issues. After you check the computer and you believe it could be stolen, write down all pertinent information, and give me both your information and the computer as soon as possible.�

I could care less if the laptop that was stolen was just some home computer, but this has not been the case. The first laptop I cam across that was stolen turned out to be one of the ones stolen from a local school. But nothing was done. The latest one, which I found, seems to have been stolen from a company called Veridyne. I figured this out because it wanted to log into a domain called �VERIDYNE�. Not to mention that she didn�t give us her log in and password, and she just gave a description of �slow internet�. Are these students so stupid as to think we will just wipe the drive, re-install the OS with our copy, put our copy of Office 2003 on it, and then just give it back to them like nothing happened?

In the end, I guess my boss just doesn�t completely understand the term Criminal Negligence. If there was any sensitive data on the laptop and it passed through our hands without notifying the authorities (and knowing it was probably stolen), we could end up having criminal charges filed against us. I don�t like this at all. I�m afraid I may have to go to his boss with this one.
